When it first came out, I was astonished at how brazen it was. It was the dawn of adult cartoons and in this girl’s opinion it led the way. Sure, there were others that were out already that pushed the envelope, but there is no other cartoon like Family Guy.

Of course, growing up I had my favorites. There was He-Man and She-Ra, Thundercats and Voltron and there was even a time in the 90s when X-Men and Batman the Animated Series had my attention. But nothing has lasted the test of time like Family Guy. South Park was also one that I liked and comes in a close second, especially with it’s smart writing, but the loveable characters that I have grown to love over the past 10 years has only grown even further. With surviving cancellation back in 2005, as well as a lack of ideas in recent years, it still is my favorite show in which I can always watch classic episodes and find something funny or that I can relate to.

Even the musical numbers that used to annoy me, I now find heartwarming.

Cheers to you Family Guy and another 20 years in the making!

Stay Tuned.

  1. I’m late to the family guy. I started watching a couple of years ago with my son. I was a big simpsons fan when it first came out but eventually go bored with it. Shortly after I started watching, Chris did his Tourette Hamster Dance, and it pissed me off (I have Tourette). After writing a blog post about the show and acknowledging the racism, misogynism and the ableism I decided to stop watching We started watching it again a few months ago and I have to say, I’m really impressed by the inventiveness of the show. The episode we watched tonight reimagined Family Guy as a TV show from the 50s, 60s and 70s. It’s really more clever than anything else on TV. I could do without the isms, but I recognize that the constant shock is part of the appeal. I would say it’s my favorite cartoon as well.

    1. Hi Jeff! Thanks so much for your comment on my post. I will admit, Family Guy can be crass and a bit insensitive – I do remember that episode where Chris did that Tourette Dance and it was totally wrong on so many levels. People can argue that’s what makes the show so humorous because it can be so edgy, but sometimes you have to wonder what crosses the line between edgy and offensive kind of like how South Park can be. I haven’t gotten to watch some of the newer episodes of late so I will definitely check out the one you mentioned about the 50s 60s and 70s, but I have to agree that it is one of the cleverest shows on TV today.
